Love

Love. It’s a common theme in our generation. Within every person, there is an innate desire to love and to be loved. But this desire comes at a price, and it’s a price few are willing to pay. What is it that causes the words “I love you” to be so dangerous? What defines love, or better yet, what does love give definition to?

I find myself in a state of beautiful perplexity. This extravagant affection I feel leaves me at a loss for words, but it is in my loss for words that I find peace. I find meaning. I find purpose. Love is an overflowing well, an ocean in which I drown in, the sun I bask in. Love defines me; it is my purpose.

Taking up the task of love comes at a price. It requires sacrifice. Both, love and sacrifice, are intricate and intertwined. You cannot have one over the other, for they go hand-in-hand. Vulnerability, I have found, is key in experiencing and developing love, true love. For love, in its purest form, has no conditions, no boundaries, no limits, and no end. It is in the words “I love you” that this commitment is found, and it is this commitment that causes love to be so dangerous.

Committing to the object of your affection, gives permission for that object to break your heart. By all means it is no sorrowful sever, but a beautiful mend in which change can commence. Love is give, and love is take. It draws things out of us and places new things in. This process of falling in love and giving your heart away is a difficult one, but the joyous life it brings makes it all worth it. Your heart, all you are, will be wrung. In fact, it might even break! For when we fall in love, we surrender our hearts, our entire lives! But it is in this sacrifice that love is made whole, perfect. Sacrifice defines love, and love defines us.
